RCW Elementary Curriculum
Math - The district has adopted Reveal MN Math for the 2026-2027 school year for students K-5. Reveal MN Math is a comprehensive math curriculum that offers the flexibility of print, digital, and blended instruction. Elementary Math Instructions consist of math instructional minutes with a minimum of 45 minutes per day of Tier 1 CORE instructional time. An additional 15-40 minutes of Tier 1, 2, and 3 WIN (RTI)Math time. Math instruction is aligned with the current MN Math Standards.
Reading - RCW adopted Benchmark Advance as their curriculum resource in 2021-2022. The curriculum is rich in informational text developed around Science and Social Studies Themed Units, while also promoting literature that is related to the unit topics. Elementary English Language Arts instruction consists of a minimum of 120 minutes daily.
After the implementation of the READ Act in 2022-20
Science - Elementary Science standards are integrated into our core math and reading instruction. Our district encourages an integrated approach in order for children to apply their math and ELA skills across all content areas. The elementary school takes a hands-on approach to science instruction whenever possible.
Social Studies - Elementary Social Studies grade level standards including areas of US. and World History, Civics, Economics, and Geography are part of our goal to provide a well rounded education for all students. Social Studies standards are also integrated into our core math and reading instruction. Our district encourages an integrated approach in order for children to apply their math and ELA skills across all content areas.
Ancillary Elementary Classes - Renville County West Elementary students receive instruction and practice opportunities in other learning environments and content areas including:
Physical Education - Students in grades PreK - 5 receive daily PE instruction throughout the school year. Classes are a minimum of 25 minutes in length.
Music - Students in grades PreK- 5 receive music instruction on a rotating weekly basis throughout the school year for 25 minutes 2 to 3 times per week. Students in grades 5 receive band instruction and general music if the student elects band.
Social Emotional Learning - Students in K-5 receive direct instruction in SEL using the Second Step® Curriculum daily with their classroom teacher. School Social Workers/Counselors deliver skills and concepts taught in the 25-30 minute direct instruction lesson 1 time per week in response to school data as part of our Tier 1 SEL system. Tier 2 and Tier 3 instruction and interventions are implemented in collaboration with the school mental health team using data from mySAEBRS, classroom teacher, reflection room referrals, and discipline referrals to make driven decisions.
Library experiences - Elementary students participate in regular library visits 1 time per week.
